Discover the joy and thrill of Stamp collecting

History of the Montgomery Area Stamp Club

The Montgomery Area Stamp Club was formed in 1973 in Montgomery, Alabama and has
operated continuously since then. The club had about 25 members, one of which was an
APS dealer, and met at the Doster Center in Prattville, Alabama. Around 2000, the club
moved its meetings to the Crump Center in Montgomery, where they are still held.

Around 2005, the club began holding stamp and coin shows in Prattville at the Doster
Center, where the club originally held its meetings. These shows featured both stamp and
coin dealers, and were well attended. The shows continued until the COVID pandemic
arrived in 2019, when all shows were cancelled until 2023. The show in 2023 proved to be
the club’s final show due to a lack of stamp dealers willing to attend.

Of historical interest was the club’s effort to have a historical marker placed in downtown
Montgomery to mark the location of the office of the first postmaster general of the
Confederacy. The unveiling of the marker took place in November, 2012.
The club has also initiated an effort to have the US Postal Service issue a series of stamps
honoring the First Ladies of the United States, which so far has not succeeded.
Throughout the 53 years of the club’s existence, it has continued to provide a home for
philatelists of all types and interests in the Montgomery area. We have also provided
informational resources to the community for those who may have inherited stamp
collections and are unsure of what to do with their collection.

                                                Stamp Club Meetings

The Montgomery Area Stamp Club holds its meetings at the Crump Center,
1751 Cong. W. L. Dickinson Dr., Montgomery, AL 36107. Meetings are held on the 2nd
and 4th Thursdays of each month from 5:00 until 7:00 pm (CST). The first meeting of the
month opens with a mini auction of items presented by club members. This is followed by
a business meeting presided over by the Club President that follows an agenda to be
emailed to club members prior to the meeting. The main feature of the meeting is a
program presented by a club member on some topic of interest related to philately.
Members are also encouraged to bring material to trade with or sell to club members, after the program.

The second meeting of the month features an auction consisting of lots submitted for
bidding to the club, which is compiled into a list to be emailed to club members. Club
members are responsible for bringing their own lots for auction to the club meeting. At the
end of the auction, members are free to meet, talk, trade, or discuss ideas for future meetings.

Past program meetings have included presentations on topics such as:
How do I dispose of my stamp collection?
Understanding the secret marks on US bank note stamps
Postal history of the Hawaiian Islands
Techniques for watermark detection
How to identify US grilled stamps and grill types.
